Boxers go for gold in Denmark

SIX boxers from Whitehaven and District ABC will be going for gold at a prestigious tournament in Denmark this weekend when they will face opposition from across Europe.
Ethan Scowcroft, Darren Askew, Nathan Askew, Dean Laughlin, Glenn Morton and Garrick Robb will box in the Hillarod Box-Cup in Copenhagen on Saturday and, if they battle through, the following day in the final.
The trip is being funded by grants from Neighbourhood Forums, who came up with over £1600, and the Youth Work In Cumbria Partnership who have granted the club £500.
Coach Tim Savage said: “We are very grateful to both the Neighbourhood Forums and the Youth Work In Cumbria Partnership for their generosity.
“The grants have meant that we are able to give these lads the opportunity to box abroad against lads from different countries who will have different styles.
“We have been told that the standard is very high so the lads will have to be in tip-top form.
“It’s a big ask of them but the experience will put them in good stead for the future.”
It will be Darren Askew’s last appearance before he competes in the ABA championship’s preliminary round next week in Blackburn.
Savage added: “We won’t know who is boxing until that day.
“A couple of good performances in Denmark will put him in good stead.
“Hopefully he’ll have a busy couple of months ahead of him.”
