WHITEHAVEN Rugby League Club has led tributes to its young superfan Gary Telford, who died suddenly last Friday.
The 23-year-old, who suffered from muscular dystrophy and used a wheelchair, was a popular face at Haven matches.
He died at the West Cumberland Hospital, surrounded by his family, and his funeral service was held yesterday at St Bridget’s Church, Moresby, followed by cremation at Distington Hall Crematorium.
Mr Telford attended every home game and many away matches, and he was thrilled in 2004 when rewarded for his loyalty when named Haven’s Most Dedicated Fan by LHF Healthplan.
The National League sponsors heard how his dad Stephen used to carry his son on to a supporters’ coach, to ensure he could travel to away games, before taking delivery of a specially-adapted van.
His prize was two tickets to the Grand Final at Widnes, when Haven lost to Leigh Centurions, and along with the leading fans from fellow National League clubs, the then 22-year-old was presented to the 11,000-capacity crowd at Halton Stadium.
Haven spokesman John Cox said: “The whole club sends condolences and sympathy to the family.
“We are quite devastated by this. We are so sorry it has happened. It’s so sad.”
Superfan Gary was so devoted to Haven that he held his 21st birthday party in the Recreation Ground’s JJ McKeown bar.
Haven support group member Paul Goodwin revealed how fans had been taken aback on learning of his death.
“Everybody is shocked by it,” he said. “He was a popular figure at the club, and everyone will remember him wheeling his motorised wheelchair in front of the Kells End, before taking his place in the stand for home games.”
Haven fans are now to discuss how they can raise funds in aid of muscular dystrophy research. And they sent a wreath, in the shape of a rugby ball, to Gary’s funeral.
