Rooney tunes up Haven squad
THERE’S no substitute for experience or class. At the ripe old age of 31, Jamie Rooney still reeks class as well as being a consummate reader of a game.

Distractions on the field needed
WILL Jamie Rooney breathe a bit of fresh air into the Recreation Ground scene? A feel-good factor is certainly needed at the Recre amid all the Pow Beck stadium fallout.

Haven’s World Cup champers goes flat
IT’S all over now – at least as far as hosting two World Cup games is concerned. Yesterday’s shock decision that our much vaunted but contentious Pow Beck sports stadium can’t go ahead as planned means that West Cumbria will not directly take part in what has been hailed as one of Britain’s biggest sporting events of 2013.

Defeat leaves just one question
TOWN came, they smashed – oh, how they smashed – and grabbed their just deserts. Hapless Haven were on the receiving end of another bad ‘carbon copy’ local derby defeat at the hands of the old enemy. This time it was a huge Easter embarrassment as Haven left the Recre field wearing Good Friday’s sackcloth and ashes.

Countdown to Good Friday clash
GET here as fast as you can – that was my plea to Whitehaven’s two Papua New Guinea captures in the aftermath of an embarrassing Northern Rail Cup exit at Derwent Park.

Eye on the Ball
WHAT a World Cup wobbler – not in Whitehaven but down in Cardiff. Here we can sit in the glow of a job well done – two World Cup fixtures in the bag and we’re assured (guaranteed I hope) that Pow Beck stadium will be ready in good time to host them.

How long is a week in sport?
A WEEK can be just as long in sport as it is in politics. Especially in the past seven days or so for Whitehaven RLFC.

Where there’s a will... there’s a way
HELLS-a-popping over that stadium. Will it or won’t it go ahead as things go to the wire?

Can Gailer down the Dons?
A TALE of two halves – and most definitely two coaches. Listening to Darren Holt and Don Gailer it was hard to believe Barrow had just won a topsy-turvey Northern Rail Cup derby – and Haven had lost.

Aye, Aye captain
WHAT’S in captaincy? Opinions differ. If one man doesn’t make a team, then one player however good or experienced can only shoulder so much as skipper. Collective responsibility then.

That fateful day at the seaside!
DO you remember the day we went to Blackpool? Or more to the point how could we possibly forget it?

Step forward ‘The Don’
IT’S amazing what a bit of belief can do – let alone a few choice words. The twin factors certainly worked a treat in the second half for Whitehaven against the Leeds Rhinos XIII on Sunday.

PLENTY of new faces on view and perhaps Sunday’s Ike Southward Memorial match at Derwent Park will bring a fresh dynamic for both Haven and Town.

Who’s got the best boot?
LEEDS supremo Gary Hetherington’s recent description of his club skipper Kevin Sinfield as “the finest kicker in the history of rugby” slightly shocked me.

You can’t beat a festive discussion!
WITH no Christmas local derby in the offing after all – Town can’t raise a team – it’s a chance to indulge in a little bit of RL nostalgia.
