HOT West Cumbrian pros-pect Blake Mahovic is trying his luck with Super League champs Wigan Warriors.
The Egremont Rangers and West Cumbria Under-18s starlet has linked up with Wigan’s Under-20s.
“He’s with Wigan as a terms and conditions player and deserves, after some fantastic performances locally, to get the opportunity to show what he can do,” said Gary Hewer, West Cumbria spokesman.
“Blake is at university in Manchester but has shown his commitment by still turning out for Egremont and West Cumbria Under-18s.
“He’s another example of how our area produces top class amateurs at international level, and with his athletic ability he could play anywhere in the team.
“He now wants to see if he can take it to the next level.”
Mahovic, who is to tour South Africa with Great Britain Community Lions Under-18s next month, was also a member of Haven reserve-grade’s title-winning side last term and the pro club are keeping tabs on the youngster.
“Blake’s a real gentleman and we have a good rapport with him.
“We are in regular contact,” added Hewer, also an assistant coach at the Recre.
Mahovic was the coaches and players’ player of the season for West Cumbria Under-18s in their title-winning campaign where he showed great versatility.
He started the campaign at centre, moved to the back-row and then to prop.
And he was also prominent in helping Egremont secure promotion out of the National Conference League Division Two this year.
Hewer said: “Blake went on to be a key figure in Egremont’s promotion this year and the club deserves great credit in nurturing him and other young players.”
