WHITEHAVEN have snapped up highly rated amateur John Todd.

The 22-year-old has been a star for Ellenborough Rangers, and has gained valuable experience playing in the Cumberland Amateur Rugby League competition.

Todd scored 14 tries in just 18 appearances last term - including two hat-tricks.

The powerful forward is a strong runner, with one of his scores coming from his own try line.

Haven chiefs are delighted to have signed the young prospect, with James Robinson, the club’s director of football, saying: “We have signed a very good local lad.

“John is an up-and-coming forward. He’s a big lad with great hands, and has the skills.

“We want to help him develop those skills, and expect him to get better and better as he makes the big change from the amateur to professional ranks.”

Todd’s signature continues Haven’s links with the local ranks.

The club keeps a keen eye on rising stars, and have moved quickly to land Todd.

He was shown around the club’s training facilities last night by Robinson and fellow director Gary Eilbeck.

John Barry, Ellenborough secretary, described Todd’s talent as “raw”, and said: “John’s try-scoring record for a forward was phenomenal last season.

“To get 14 tries in 18 games is incredible, and we wish him all the best.

“We all hope he makes it as a professional player, but it’s too early to say if he will.

“A lot of lads make the step up, and this is a big one from Carl to the Championship.

“Many end up back in the amateur ranks so it will be up to John to get his head down and work hard, which he is more than capable of doing.”
