FLYING winger Elliott Miller’s aim is simple – to enjoy playing rugby league again, and scoring tries for Whitehaven.

The prolific finisher announced he was quitting fierce rivals Workington Town last week, and has now put pen to paper on a deal at The Recre.

Haven chiefs were left stunned when Town opted to release “such a very talented player”, and swooped quickly to land their man.

In a statement, Haven branded Miller a “major signing”, and said: “Elliot has size, speed and talent in abundance and will help make Whitehaven’s three-quarter line formidable next season.

“Obviously, we were delighted when Workington decided to release such a very talented player and messrs Coyle and Robinson stepped in immediately.

“One club’s loss is certainly a case of Whitehaven’s gain.”

Miller, who started his career with Millom ARL before switching to Hull FC, said in a post to his 1,000 followers on Twitter: “I have spent the last year not enjoying my rugby.

“It’s time for a change, and hopefully I will start to enjoy my rugby again.”

Millom-born Miller crossed the whitewash 12 times in 18 outings last term, including a hat-trick in Town’s 28-6 win over Whitehaven.

The 23-year-old missed the start of the season with a long-standing back issue Miller, who spent six years at Workington, is a former Championship One Young Player of the Year, and a regular try scorer.

Haven say the signing is a signal of intent as they look to improve next term.

They avoided relegation from the Championship on the final day with a win over doomed Doncaster.

The club has been working hard behind the scenes to ensure there is no repeat next time around.

Nathan Lucock has already put pen to paper on a 12-month contract with the Copeland club.

He joined from Workington last week, and with Miller now agreeing to a switch, club bosses hope they are showing the loyal supporters they mean business.

The Haven statement added: “We know the fans will take to this talented young man. There is no substitute for sheer speed.

“We hope the fans realise how hard the football committee is working to bring entertainment back to the Recreation Ground.

“Signings like Elliot Miller will help to fill the terraces and his signing fits in with the board’s broad strategy of revitilising the club on all fronts.”

Whitehaven are still not finished in the transfer market, and are expected to make another signing next week.
