New chairman and three directors announced

A NEW chairman of the University of Cumbria board has been appointed this month.

Stephen Henwood, who is well known in Cumbria as chair of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, took up his position on October 1.
He has an experienced financial background along with taking chairman roles. The board also agreed the appointment of three directors.
As well as serving on the main board two will be members of its newly created finance and resources committee and the other will become a member of the audit committee. They are Geoffrey Donnelly, Steve Curl and Mark Renwick Smith.
The meeting saw the board agree a budget for the coming year which sees the university moving into surplus for the first time since it was founded three years ago.
This follows the completion of two voluntary severance schemes, streamlining of services, course review process, reshaping the estate and management of budgets within various departments.Applications to the university continue to rise. It has recently seen record numbers of students wanting to come to the University of Cumbria and student recruitment targets have already been met for this year.
university unveils its new senior managers
THREE new senior managers have been appointed at the University of Cumbria.
Professor Sandra Jowett will take up her post as pro-vice chancellor in January 2011.
She moves to Cumbria from the University of Chichester, West Sussex.
The new dean of the faculty of education is Sam Twiselton.
Sam brings extensive experience within the teacher training sector. She will take up her new role of dean on November 1.
The university's new director of human resources is Janet Whitworth.
She will be joining the university on November 15. She comes to the university from the health service where she was director of HR for two large primary care trusts in Lancashire.
ACCOLADE FOR UCLAN IN GOOD UNIVERSITY GUIDE
THE University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) has been named the top modern university in the North West.
According to The Sunday Times Good University Guide for 2010, published this month, UCLan was placed as the leading modern institution in the region.
Recent Guardian, Independent and Times newspaper league tables also put UCLan ahead of all its local rivals.
The university scored well in terms of student satisfaction.
UCLan improved on last year after ranking eighth among modern universities and third amongst the North West universities. Two subject also scored highly in the league table, communications and information studies and tourism; transport and travel were in the national top 10.
UCLan’s director for Cumbria, Mick Farley said: “These results once again confirm UCLan’s position as the North West’s leading modern university.
“Our initiatives to improve student satisfaction and provide an excellent student experience are at the core of everything we do and I’m delighted that we have performed so well within these areas.

EMPLOYMENT initiative Routes 2 Work, unveiled a new website this month aimed at informing unemployed people in West Cumbria of potential opportunities.
The website offers information to visitors on the programme, its tailored support packages, and the how to get help from the Routes 2 Work team.
Launched in 2005 and supported by Derwent & Solway and Harvest Housing Group, the scheme has helped over 3,500 into work and over 700 people into learning support programmes.Its unique approach sees the team working with individuals to make sure any funding they receive meets their specific requirements and assists them to overcome issues including mental health problems, drug and alcohol addiction and homelessness.
Julie Wedgwood, Routes 2 Work manager, said: “The new website is a vital addition to the initiative, enabling us to communicate its many successes and encourage more people in need of a solution to their long term unemployment.
“Routes 2 Work has been extremely successful in engaging with unemployed people in the area of West Cumbria and we hope to help many more people to achieve their goal of gaining employment.”
