Funeral date for Cumbrian police officer killed in crash

The funeral will be held next week of a police officer who died in a motorcycle crash.

Friends and colleagues from Cumbria police will be among the mourners who will gather to pay their final respects to PC Craig Postlethwaite, 38, who lived in the Workington area.

A funeral service and cremation will be held at Distington Hall on Monday at 10.30am.

PC Postlethwaite lost his life when his motorbike collided with a VW Tiguan near Cockermouth. He was off duty at the time.

Heartfelt tributes have been paid to the policeman, an officer with the roads police squad in the west of the county who had previously worked for the fire service.He was described as an exemplary and dedicated officer and a “thoroughly decent bloke”. PC Postlethwaite had served with the force for four years.The fire service described him as “immensely popular”.

The collision happened on Wednesday, April 4 on Lamplugh Road. Police, ambulance and air ambulance crews were called out but PC Postlethwaite died at the scene.

The driver of the VW, a man, 65, from the Penrith area, was taken to hospital and treated for shock.

An inquest was opened and adjourned yesterday into PC Postlethwaite’s death by David Roberts, the coroner for north and west Cumbria.
