First Gallop a big hit

LAST weekend saw the inaugural Galloway Gallop run by Wigton Motor Club and it attracted an eclectic selection of cars from the 20s to the 70s.

The route started from Gretna on Saturday morning and headed to Jedburgh for coffee at Thirlstane and then on to Traquair for a very nice lunch.

It then headed into the hills around Talla Reservoir and Saint Mary’s Loch in rather misty conditions until the tea halt at Wanlockhead. The final section took the intrepid crews over to Ayr for the overnight halt and celebration dinner.

The weather was much improved on Sunday with warm sun greeting the cars for the start in Ayr. A series of superb deserted roads led over the passes to Glentrool for coffee at Creetown and then to Twynum and the David Coulthard Museum where enthusiasts could see the F1 car collection and watch the start of the Grand Prix over lunch.

The final part of the route led along the Solway to Powfoot for the presentation of finisher’s awards. Ron and Christine Palmer had put on a fantastic route enjoyed by all the crews. Roll on the next one.

There is loads of action over the Bank Holiday weekend. Saturday and Sunday sees the two-day Berwick Classic Rally in Northumberland, one of the highlights of the NESCRO rally season.

Saturday afternoon sees two regularities and eight tests followed by 20 tests on Sunday. A full entry has been received with several teams coming long distances to take part. The Sunday event is a round of the GK Group Historic Championship and all the leading crews are entered.

David Agnew/Graeme Mactavish will be hoping t0o keep their good run going in the Porsche while Richard and Edwin Cook are always a force to be reckoned with in the Mini Cooper. Stuart and Linda Cariss are entered in their RS2000 as part of a limited programme this year as they concentrate on enduro events.

Monday sees the third round of the TJ Services Northern Speed Championship at Teesside and the Wigton MC run event has a full entry. In addition to the usual championship runners there are contenders in the Morgan Speed Championship.
