LOOKING up from Lower King Street towards Duke Street in the far distance, this shot depicts a very different shopping experience to that of today – though there were still windows to peruse and bargains to be had.
On the left is James Brown’s emporium, a site nowadays occupied by Claire’s Accessories, where in 1897 ‘furniture, carpets and Parisian bedsteads’ could be obtained. Try buying a French bed in Whitehaven these days! On the extreme right are the premises that New Look currently trades from.
