Anglers’ delight at shoal of mackerel

A large shoal of mackerel was seen outside Whitehaven harbour, probably in search of young herring. Men in two small boats went out, and with rod and line obtained a large quantity, sometimes bringing up four of them at one haul.

Proposed railway to Windermere

A party of surveyors have been surveying the ground between Ulverston and Greenodd, and to the foot of Windermere lake, with a view of constructing a line between them.

If it went ahead there would be many benefits to the neighbourhood.

Gathering for girls’ friendly society

At the annual gathering at Seascale there were about 150. After a service in St Cuthbert’s Church, the treat, as usual, was given by Lady Muncaster.

Tea was provided in the public hall and each girl received a present of a book and a ticket for admission to the concert in the assembly room.

October 2, 1890.

Accident at Low Hall, Hensingham

Thomas Gill, of Howgill Street, Whitehaven, who is employed on the Whitehaven Castle estate, was on some scaffolding, slating the roof of an outbuilding at Low Hall when two men passed in a horse and cart.

The cart unfortunately caught the scaffolding and pulled it down. Gill fell into a stone trough, receiving injuries to his back and shoulder.

100 YEARS AGO

Million women wanted

Several millions of hospital requirements have been sent out by the British Red Cross Society for the wounded since the outbreak of war, in addition to over one million garments and enormous quantities of tobacco and sundries.

One hundred thousand women were working under the Red Cross last winter, but to meet the demands which are being made upon us we now need 10 times that number.

Boy's leg amputated

While engaged in an unfortunately too familiar practice among children, of riding on the wagons in motion on the brake near Monkwray, Tom Graham, a little boy, five or six years of age, from Kells, had the misfortune to fall from the wagon onto the railway lines, the engine wheels passing over his left leg.

75 YEARS AGO

World champion to coach at Kells

Mr Richard Bergmann, the world table tennis champion, has been secured by the Committee of Management of Kells Community and Miners’ Welfare Centre as table tennis and badminton coach.

A Spitfire in four weeks

Well done to the fundraising efforts of the people of Whitehaven and the Ennerdale and Millom rural districts!

The £5,000 for the Scawfell Spitfire was raised in about four weeks of collecting. Few areas boasting 64,000 inhabitants have equalled this magnificent achievement.

50 YEARS AGO

New Beckermet school opens

The bishop of Carlisle opened the Beckermet Church of England School this week.

The Bishop congratulated all concerned with what he called a “bold and brave enterprise” and one which had been infinitely worthwhile.

National Park centre in Lakeland?

The Lake District may become one of the first areas to have a “National Park Centre” offering a wide range of cultural, recreational and information services to all types of visitors.

New Market Hall on the cards?

A new scheme for the rejuvenation of Whitehaven Market Hall may be on the cards. It is understood Copeland Council is looking at a plan which would make the hall habitable again.

Olympic success

Mayfield School’s team returned from a disabled games event in Glasgow with a hatful of medals. Team members were Neil Haworth, Claire Irving, David Robson and Jennifer Wallace.
