MUSIC is on the menu at a Whitehaven restaurant – courtesy of a talented member of staff.

Head waiter Steve Wharton will showcase his musical skills – honed over a well-travelled career – to entertain diners at Casa Romana on Monday, November 2 from 8pm.

Steve has recently moved back to the area after living in the Czech Republic and China where he developed his songwriting skills with folk band Dram and appearances at festivals.

Steve said: “Whilst I’ve been away, my main instrument has been the ukulele because of its portability and I also started singing more unaccompanied songs.

“Now that I’m back home, I’ve been able to introduce more instruments into my set including guitar, concertina and a three-stringed, high fretted banjo from Xinjiang, a desert region of China that borders Kazakhstan.”

Steve incorporates the theme of travel into his songwriting.

“I also find it a useful tool to explore why some travellers are called ex-pats and some migrants,” he added.

“Another theme I write about is the concept of home, and particularly Cumbria. I spent a lot of time in Ulverston this summer talking about local history and traditions so some of these converstations have inspired songs.”

Richard Shannan, the chef and patron of Casa Romana, added: “We’re excited about hosting this music night as it fits in well with what we do.

“We play Italian music in the background and there’s the odd Italian folk song or tarantella in the mix so Steve’s style of music will fit in well, and as live music is always so popular around Whitehaven, it should be a great night; good food, good music and good atmosphere!”
