Ex-Workington Town ace predicts 'tasty encounter' in derby

Workington Town’s crunch clash with Barrow Raiders at Derwent Park on Sunday (3pm) could turn out to be a “tasty encounter”, according to Raiders scrum-half and former Town favourite Liam Campbell.

Victory could see either team in the driving seat for the winner-take-all £50,000 title-winners cheque.

Scrum-half Campbell, 26, said: “Darren [coach Darren Holt] doesn’t have to say a lot to get us up for this one.

“It could be quite a tasty game when you look at the individual battles around the field. Some of the Town players are ex-Barrow, and some of the lads in our team have played for Town so we know a lot about each other.

“I have played some big games during my three years with Barrow in the Championship but this one is up there. A rugby-playing career isn’t a long one and we all like to win trophies. I haven’t had much silverware and Sunday’s game is a big chance to put the winning team on the road to the title.”

Campbell is in his fourth season at home-club Barrow after playing a couple of injury-ravished seasons at Derwent Park. He is the only ever-present in the Raiders line-up and has scored 20 cup and league tries this term.

“We’re going well,” said Campbell, whose team lead the table by six points, although Town do have a game in hand after Sunday’s postponed game at Gateshead.

“We had a good win at home to Oldham on Sunday and put 40 points on a team that had beaten us in the league and cup this season. It was our first-half performance that made the difference.

“It’s going to be close against Town but everywhere I go in Barrow people are talking about the game and telling me they’re going up for it.

“Hopefully, we’ll have a big following and it will make it a bit less-daunting for us at Derwent Park.”

Should Campbell play as expected on Sunday, his ever-present run will come to an end as he misses Barrow’s clash with Rochdale on August 19. He’s tying the knot with fiancée Anne but will be back for the remainder of the season.
