They won 29-20 at York Acorn on Sunday to stay firmly in the promotion picture with two more wins needed from their last two games.

York had gone into the game needing two points to clinch the title and it got off to a cracking start for them with two well-worked tries which were both converted.

But then big prop Richard Farrer started to give the York defence something to think about and on 19 minutes John Paul Brocklebank spotted a gap and rolled over to score and convert.

The game was being played at full throttle with York doing their best to break down the Rangers defence but Ben Walker, Matt Bewsher and Matty Palmer were particularly prominent with their tackling.

On 34 minutes Leon Crellin raced down the wing, after receiving a cracking pass from Bewsher and went over for a try. Brocklebank’s conversion put Egremont level.

However, right on half-time, York were awarded another penalty and made the most of it by kicking themselves into a two point advantage at the break.

The second half started with a score for the Cumbrians. Crellin booted the ball across the field and before York could react Walker had flipped the ball to Dale Horn who crashed over in the corner to score.

Back came York and on 48 minutes they went back into the lead with a converted try.

Then with Daniel Telford, James McDonald, and Brocklebank pulling the York defence in all directions Egremont got their reward on 56 minutes with another try. Brocklebank finished off and landed the conversion for a 22-20 lead.

The last twenty minutes weren’t for the faint hearted with Palmer, Peter Bewsher, Tom Whalley and Kevin Brown smashing everything that moved.

It was Farrer, showing the form which pro clubs Whitehaven and Workington failed to exploit, who was outstanding and he crashed over on 67 minutes for the clinching try which Brocklebank converted.

The final nail in York’s coffin came from Peter Murphy who put over a drop goal to seal victory for what was a terrific team effort.
