THE high-speed exploits of a young Cumbrian rally star are helping to drive business in his home county, an industry chief has claimed.
John Grainger, managing director of Invest in Cumbria says the success of Matthew Wilson and his Carlisle co-driver Scott Martin in the World Rally Championship is helping raise the profile of Cumbria as a desirable business location.
Wilson drives for the M-Sport Stobart Ford team based in Cockermouth, run by his father Malcolm.
Wilson and Martin are currently celebrating their most successful year in the World Rally Championship after their best-ever finish at the Wales Rally GB when they powered to fifth place at the weekend.
Their 10-point haul lifted them to seventh place in the drivers’ championship.
Mr Grainger said their exploits were helping Invest in Cumbria, which sponsors the pair, to raise the profile of the county across the world. Matthew is a young ambassador for the county.” said Mr Grainger.
“His appearances around the world for the M-Sport Stobart Ford Rally team showcase two of this county’s great brands and the inclusion of the Invest in Cumbria logo on his overalls says a lot about where his and his team’s heart is.
“M-Sport is one of the most high-profile motorsport companies in the world; a true Cumbrian success story. We are proud to have them here.
“Matthew and Scott’s latest success in Wales is great testament to their grit and determination.”
Team boss Malcolm Wilson said: “Matthew has had a very strong year. He’s finished in the top five more than any other season and to finish 2011 with his best-ever result on home territory is the perfect ending, both for him and for the British fans.”
