Cumbrian pub regulars saddle up to raise cash for cancer charity

Regulars and friends of a Cumbrian pub swapped bar stools for bike seats to raise more than £6,000 for charity.
A team of 61 people rode 25 miles around Carlisle to boost the funds of Cancer Research UK by £6,165.
The annual ride started four years ago with just 15 regulars from The Spinners Arms in Cummersdale, near Carlisle.
But earlier this year, more than four times that number aged between 13 and 75 rose to the challenge.
At the presentation night last Saturday the owners of The Spinners Arms, Al and Alison Davis, handed over the cheque to Cancer Research UK’s area volunteer manager, Natasha Howe.
Mrs Davis said: “We were stunned to be able to hand over a cheque on Saturday for over £6,000.
“Following the success of previous years cycle rides, we had a lot more people joining us and even though the current climate is really difficult, they did a phenomenal job in raising this much money.
“We raised nearly £10,000 over the previous three years so to get this much in one year is simply amazing.”
Cancer Research UK works to improve the understanding of cancer and develop better ways to prevent, diagnose and treat the disease.
Mrs Howe said: “We are absolutely delighted that the cyclists decided to attempt such a great challenge to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
“They did lots of preparation and it certainly paid off raising such an amazing amount! We can’t thank them enough for all their support.
“Cancer Research UK has made enormous progress in the fight against cancer and continues to do so.
“However, we have only been able to do this thanks to the dedication and commitment of our volunteers and supporters without whom we would not be able to fund our vital research.”
The fundraiser was supported by Eden Woodland Consultants, Pioneer, Ezi Blinds and The Spinners Arms. Mr and Mrs Davis would also like to give a special mention to Scotby Cycles, who came to the aid of one of the cyclists who broke down on route.
