A woman has been told her part in a ring to supply the party drug Miaow Miaow makes prison inevitable.

Angela Clark, 52, of Robert Owen Avenue, Cleator Moor, was found guilty of conspiracy to supply the drug – between March 1 and May 22 last year – and possession of it on April 25.

The jury hearing her case at Carlisle Crown Court were told Clark was stopped by police in a hire car on April 25 last year on the A66 near Appleby.

Officers had been tracking the car all day as it had been travelling from west Cumbria to Leicester on a drugs run. They found 1.5kg of methcatinone, commonly known as Miaow Miaow, worth around £30,000.

This was part of a wider investigation into criminals bringing the drug to Cumbria to sell.

When officers searched Clark’s home they found scales containing traces of the drug, as well as 9g of amphetamine.

Clark originally told police that she had gone to Birminghham to meet a boyfriend. She was carrying a neighbour named Grant Robertson as a passenger.

Clark than added that she had left the car for 90 minutes and Robertson had remained in the car during this time.

Police then asked her why, if she had gone to Birmingham, she had travelled back up the M1 and across the A66 to get to west Cumbria. Clark claimed her satnav had taken her this way.

However, analysis showed the satnav had been set to direct Clark to Leicester.

Jeremy Grout-Smith, prosecuting, said: “Her testimony just doesn’t stack up.”

He added: “If you were in Leicester and asked directions home to Cumbria, it may well show the A66.

“But in Birmingham I don’t think it would unless it’s the sort of satnav that’s no use at all.”

Judge Paul Batty said: “Custody is quite inevitable for this level of offending, the only question is the length of the sentence.”

Clark will be sentenced along with the other members of the conspiracy. This process is set to begin today.

The jury found Clark not guilty of possessing 212 counterfeit £1 coins.
