About 900 Rainbows, Brownies, Rangers and Guides from all over Cumbria went to Richard Rose Morton Academy on Sunday to take part in an Olympic-themed event day called Get Set Go.

It was a chance to try new activities, make new friends and to have some fun at the same time.

Event co-ordinator Jan Howe said: “It creates a sense of belonging to an organisation, creates a sense of adventure and gives them the confidence to try new activities.

“We have also mixed them up so they get to meet girls from other units, which is something they wouldn’t normally get to do.”

Guides raced through an inflatable assault course and competed to see how far they could run while attached to a piece of elastic.

The games were part of an It’s A Knockout-style competition as part of the Get Set Go event.

There were also opportunities for singing and dancing and to try a variety of sports including football and rugby.

Some of the girls also got to grips with one of the Olympic torches which passed through west Cumbria last week.

Lyn Roberts, commissioner for the Derwent Division, said: “The day is about teamwork, getting together and seeing that we are part of something bigger than just our unit.”

She added: “The volunteers who have organised this event deserve an award.”
