A driver accused of causing death by careless driving says she wishes she could “turn back time” and prevent the collision.

Rychenda Edgar, 23, of Dryden Way, Egremont, appeared at Carlisle Crown Court to give evidence at her trial.

She is accused of causing the death of Marjorie Borwick, a 71-year-old childcare worker.

Mrs Borwick was thrown into the air after she was hit by a Ford Ka driven by Edgar outside St John’s Church at Bigrigg on December 4, 2011.

Mrs Borwick’s twin sons John and Christopher had both crossed the street safely, and were then followed by Mrs Borwick’s daughter Julie Crabtree and her husband Brian.

Mrs Borwick followed but was struck by Edgar’s vehicle.

Giving evidence, Edgar said: Edgar said: "I thought 'I have killed someone.' I wish I could turn back time. After I hit her I couldn’t get out of the car because I was in so much shock.

“I thought they would stay and wait in the road. I wasn’t expecting them to cross the road at that time.”

Edgar said that she is shortsighted but was wearing glasses that corrected this problem.

Police evidence shows that when Edgar braked before hitting Mrs Borwick she was travelling at around 40mph – well within the speed limit on that patch of road.

But prosecution barrister Michael Blakey said: “You had the opportunity to stop when you saw them cross the road.”

The trial continues.
