CONSERVATIVE candidate Richard Rhodes has won the first ever PCC elections.
Former headmaster and Barrow magistrate Mr Rhodes, from Staveley near Ulverston, will start work on Thursday. (22)
In the first round of voting, Mr Rhodes polled 18,080 votes and Dr Leonard achieved 15,301. The second choice of voters that opted for the other candidates will now be counted and a final result will be revealed later this afternoon.
Independent candidate Mary Robinson missed out on making it through to the second round by 56 votes. Lib Dem candidate Pru Jupe polled 13,623. In total, 64,263 votes were cast however 2014 of these were considered to be spoiled.
The winning Conservative candidate polled 25,408 votes with Labour’s Patrick Leonard finishing second with 20,370 votes.
Mr Rhodes said he wanted to share his experiences and talents with the people of Cumbria, and he was looking forward to working with the police.
Voters went to the polls yesterday however turnout is 16.38 per cent for the county. In Barrow, only 8.37 per cent (4,464 people) took part however South Lakeland had the highest turnout in the county at 23.78 per cent. The figure for Copeland was 14.21 per cent.
Commissioners are being elected across England and Wales today to replace police authorities.
They will have powers to hire and fire chief constables, and to set policing priorities and force budgets.

@ The refusnik - haven't you heard? Mr Rhodes is against anti social behaviour - bet the Police are kicking themselves now for not thinking of that first!

REGARDING PIGSICK LETTER 21ST NOVEMBER 2012. sir/mdm its always been a criminal offence. to leave a vehicle with the engine running unatended.when i passed my driving test 46 years ago it was in my highway code.so the police person was with in his/her right to book you.and hopefull prosicute you for it.
