Cockermouth Titans in clash for second U16 honour
Last updated at 20:52, Thursday, 02 June 2011
The U16 top four final will be contested by Cockermouth Titans and Kells after both came successfully through their semi-final ties.
The Titans were never in any trouble in their fixture against Wath Brow, running out 56-0 winners.
Ed Gate, Tom Walker and Rorie Henderson all crossed twice and other touchdowns came from Kieran Featherstone, Sam Rossi, Luke Crossman and Jack Clarke.
Jack Clarke completed Cockermouth’s scoring with eight conversions.
Kells had a much harder route to the final in their encounter against Ellenborough, having to come from 16-0 down before winning 24-16.
Ellenborough were playing down the Welfare Ground slope with the wind behind them in the first half and Harry Martyn got them off to a great start when scoring under the posts and Kyle Dempsey converted.
Dempsey increased the Rangers lead on 18 minutes, racing 30 metres to score in the corner.
And five minutes before the break Ellenborough’s hooker Jason Todd scored and Dempsey converted for a 16-0 lead at the break.
But all the scoring in the second half came from Kells as they replied with tries from Jamie Doran (3) and Ben Milburn who also landed four conversions.
In the U14 league Kells moved a step closer to lifting the championship trophy with a 32-0 win over closest rivals Glasson.
Dominic Wear led the way for Kells with a try and four conversions, Ross Ainley crossed twice, with other touchdowns coming from Cameron Seeds, Jordan Johnstone and Daniel Caine.
Kells now only need one point from their remaining two fixtures to lift the trophy and Glasson are now guaranteed a home tie in the top four play-offs.
Wath Brow made sure of third spot on their trip to Broughton Red Rose when they came away with a 24-10 victory. An early mistake straight from the kick-off by Broughton resulted in Wath Brow putting the first points on the board when full-back Clarke Riley went in at the corner.
Loose forward Jake Moore landed a great touch line conversion to put the Brow 6-0 up.
Good hands by the Brow and interchanging passes by Riley and Moore on 13 minutes ended with the loose forward going in under the posts and after also landing the conversion, the visitors were 12-0 in front.
Wath Brow increased their lead just before the break when again after good hands by the back division resulted in second rower Aiden Coulthard joining in the line to go over under the posts.
Moore added the extras to give the Brow a 18-0 half-time lead. Broughton went further behind three minutes after the break when after giving a penalty away on their own 20 metre line, the quick thinking Moore blasted onto a quick play the ball to crash through the Red Rose defence and touchdown mid way between the posts and the corner flag and with the loose forward bang on again with his goal attempt, the Hornets were 24-0 up.
Broughton put great pressure on the Brow line in the next 15 minute spell and came close to opening their account on several occasions, but good, stubborn defence by the visitors held them at bay. Broughton’s persistence paid off after 17 minutes after good hassling again resulted in Wath Brow coughing up the mistake resulting in full-back Thurlow going over in the corner.
Three minutes later and Broughton were in double figures when Wath Brow’s indiscipline resulted in Broughton being awarded a penalty on half way. Hooker Brad Taylor caught the Brow napping with a quick tap and he raced foward before offloading to the supporting Thurlow to score and add the extras.
With the game in the last minute Broughton’s No9 Taylor made a great break up the touch line but a terrific tackle from Wath Brow centre Aiden Dawson stopped the hooker from scoring and the game finished 24-10 to Wath Brow.
Broughton are now sitting agonisingly in joint fourth place in the table with Seaton but Seaton still have one game left while Broughton have completed their league programme.
