Cockermouth School chiefs throw out academy plans

Cockermouth School will not convert to an academy.
Governors met last night and voted in favour of the school remaining with the local authority.
They commissioned research and consulted widely to seek opinions on potential conversion to academy status but decided that the school will remain a local authority school.
It will continue to be funded by the Department for Education via Cumbria County Council.
Len Cockroft, chairman of governors, said: “Governors have consulted widely over the past few weeks and consultation meetings have been held with pupils, parents, staff and the community in addition to regular reviews of comments posted on the school’s website.
"It was a decisive vote and the school can now move forward in partnership with Cumbria County Council.”
Geoff Walker, headteacher, said:”The vote was taken by the board of governors to remain a local authority school.
"Due to cuts, this will result in reduced funding for the school and the associated implications.
"Cockermouth is a good and outstanding school and the leadership and staff are committed to work in the best interests of the pupils and the community. The school will move forward and we have exciting challenges and projects to plan.”
The governors voted in February to investigate conversion to academy status for the school.
Extensive consultation took place from the beginning of March until 20 May.
The range and scope of the consultation has been received positively by the professional associations, the Department for Education and Cumbria County Council.

This is good news as I believe that all institutions/establisments/businesses etc in Cumbria should be working together towards one common goal through collaboration and concensus rather than the ubiquitous competition model which is all pervasive. I hope the catalyst for a "joined up" development strategy (which should fit well under the banner of Britain's Energy Coast) will be the potentially huge Derwent Forest sustainable development. Might it be possible to review catchment areas and operating systems for the various Cumbrian Schools so that all that is good about Cockermouth School can be replicated in others?
