THE floods we had in Workington in November last year affected everybody from the community, to schools and businesses.

Straight after the floods, pupils couldn’t get to our school because the bridges were down, so the teachers decided to organise a bus to take pupils from Seaton and Northside to and from school.

The floods also had a big effect on our school council as the new transport arrangements made it hard for us to have meetings. We had been having regular meetings after school, but some members of the council lived in Seaton and Northside and had to catch the bus at 3.25, making after- school meetings impossible.

We tried having dinner time meetings but many members still couldn’t attend and that meant that the information that needed to get to people didn’t always get there. We then decided to have meetings in lesson time but we faced the same problem – people couldn’t make it, often because the lessons were too important to miss. So we started having meetings whenever we could and did our best to keep everyone well informed.

Now there is a new temporary road bridge which makes things much easier for staff and pupils and we are looking forward to new year seven pupils joining the council in September.

Even though many people were unable to make it to meetings after the disruption, we have still made a lot of progress, like having lockers fitted and organising our school talent show, Stainburn’s got Talent.

It has been hard to finish our projects this year but we have been successful with the help of pupils and staff alike.
