Elliot Miller is setting his stall out to make Haven's number one shirt his own this season - whilst boosting his try-scoring tally.

The full-back, who has been plagued by injury in the past, also hopes to stay clear of problems for the new League 1 campaign.

“Personally I want to play a full season without being injured and score tries for the team,” said the former Workington Town man.

“I haven’t set a tally, I just want to try and get as many as I can.”

Miller insists his side will go into this Sunday’s friendly at Barrow Raiders with a positive attitude, despite going down 42-0 at the hands of Keighley last weekend.

The Millom man believes Haven are capable of matching Barrow, who started their pre-season schedule well, with a 22-22 draw against Championship side Oldham Roughyeds.

“They’re a really good side,” said Miller. “It will be a tough game and we’ll have to be playing better than last week. It was a bad game for all of us, so this will be a good test.

“I know a few of the lads, they’ve got a good squad but we’re just as good. They’ve got Jarrad Stack, from Town, now who I used to play with and he’ll be a big threat. Jamie Dallimore is a really good player too.”

The players are trying to put the Keighley defeat behind them, with Miller putting it down to a bad day at the office.

He said: “It was just one of them days, we were defending for most of the game and that tired us out. We have to forget about that one.

“We need to show more composure, everyone was too keen to get hold of the ball as it was the first game back. We need to keep structured, take our time and play the moves we’ve worked on in training.”

And he’s still confident the team can challenge for promotion from League 1 in 2017, with the Keighley game a warm-up for what’s to come.

“We needed to get it out of our system, we had 23 players and I think the coach just wanted to have a look at all the lads. It was everyone’s first game for a while.”
