ROSEHILL Theatre has launched its initial programme of events to mark the beginning of its exciting 50th anniversary year.

The theatre reaches its half a century milestone in September and promises a wide range of events to celebrate.

For now, the line-up for January and February has been announced which combines music, amateur theatre, drama and film.

The programme begins on Saturday, January 24, with Classic Rhythm, a chamber group.

The trio for flute, keyboard and percussion has played to sell-out audiences all over the UK, as well as broadcast on Classic FM and BBC Radio.

Highlights of their programme will include the William Tell Overture, Ravel’s Bolero, Andante from Haydn’s Clock Symphony and music from West Side Story.

Instruments will include a wide variety from marimba to tam-tam, piccolo to cabasa.

Tickets are £12.50, concessions £10.50. The concert starts at 7.30pm.

Drama will include Under Milk Wood by Guy Masterson and Theatre Tours International on Friday, January 30, at 7.30pm.

It is an enchanting one-man physical interpretation of Dylan Thomas’ magical classic tale.

It uses nothing but a wooden chair, dark glasses, apposite lighting and a haunting soundscape.

Guy Masterson performs the entire work himself – all 69 characters including men, women, cows, a pig and a cat! Tickets are £14, concessions £12.

An afternoon of nostalgia with music and memories is next with Roll Out The Barrel. It takes place on Tuesday, February 3, at 2pm.

Terry Bradford and Susie Arveson take you on a singalong of old favourites, with over 65 songs. There will be everything from music hall classics to show songs, tickets are £12.50/£17.50 including a light lunch.

Fifteen-year-old Kit Armstrong takes to the stage on Friday, February 6, at 7.30pm. He began piano studies at the age of five and became the youngest scholarship student in the history of Chapman University in California at the age of seven.

He studies piano with Alfred Brendel and Benjamin Kaplan and attended Imperial College, London. He has appeared as soloist with numerous orchestras and has been awarded the Morton Gould Young Composer Award for five consecutive years.

His programme will include Bach, Mozart, Armstrong and Mendelssohn. Tickets are £15, £13.

One of the greatest musicals, South Pacific, will be performed by Rosehill Youth Theatre from Tuesday, February 17 to Saturday, February 21.

The talented and enthusiastic youngsters will be staging the show which is set during the Second World War.

It is the story of navy personnel living on a South Pacific island with a rich mix of characters including irresistible Bloody Mary, the vivacious Nellie and comical Luther Billis.

It will feature songs including Some Enchanted Evening, Bloody Mary, Happy Talk and I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair. Tickets are £8, concessions £6, family ticket £24.

The theatre will also be hosting the launch of David Gaffney’s book Never Never on Thursday, February 26. David will be talking about his West Cumbrian set novel, starting from 7.30pm.

An important date for the diary is also a fund-raising concert on Friday, March 20, at 7.30pm, organised by the Friends of Rosehill. The concert will feature a wide range of music including classical and folk, all performed by local artists. Tickets will be £12.50, including a buffet supper.

Films over the coming months include Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, Sex and the City, Jamaica Inn and The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.
