On your marks in memory of Town legend Ike Southward

By Tony Harrison

AMATEUR rugby league players took part in the Ike Southward Junior Memorial event at Derwent Park during the half-time interval of Town’s 58-20 victory over Blackpool Panthers.

After the sudden loss earlier this year of Ike, who was a flying winger in his time, his family agreed to award trophies for five age groups.

Ike loved to watch and encourage children to play rugby league, so every year junior players from amateur clubs will race off in their age groups to find the fastest player.

Amateur clubs were invited to send their fastest players in what will be an annual event. Any club wanting to enter a player in next year’s event should contact the club on 01900 603609.

The winners on the day were - Under-8s: Liam Williamson (Salterbeck Storm); Under-9s: Jake Moore Wath Brow Hornets;Under-11s: Luke Johnson Broughton Red Rose; Under-12s: Michael Fearon Broughton Red Rose; Under-14s: Dean McNicholas Salterbeck Storm
