A Cleator Moor teenager was rescued by emergency services last night, after falling off a 10-foot wall.

Fire crews had to break down a door to reach the 13-year-old boy, who was taken to hospital with an injured ankle. He had been climbing on the wall at Market Square when he slipped and fell into a neighbouring yard.

Ambulance crews needed police assistance after receiving a call at 8.40pm.

About 20 youths were believed to be at the scene misbehaving, but had gone before police arrived.

Steve Wilson, watch manager at Whitehaven fire station, said: “He fell from the top of the wall and landed on his ankle – he was in a lot of pain.”

He said that the teenager had been with friends, who raised the alarm at around 8.30pm and called the boy’s mum.

He added: “It was just kids being kids, I think. They had been climbing over the wall and with it being damp this time of year he just slipped.”

A police spokeswoman said: “A large group of youths were in the area climbing over vehicles.

“A patrol attended to assist the ambulance with the youths who were causing a nuisance.

“Once police arrived they all scarpered.”

She said that police do not know whether the boy who was injured was out with the youths, or whether the group saw the ambulance and ran over to see what was happening.

The injured boy was taken to the West Cumberland Hospital, Hensingham.
