Whitehaven will not rush in to an appointment to replace departing finance director Barry Richardson.

That’s the pledge from chairman Gordon Grace, who stressed that he supported Richardson’s decision to step down due to the huge workload involved in the post, and his commitments away from the Recre.

Fresh directors are expected to be appointed, in time, to the board, which is now only three-strong.

“Nothing knee-jerk will happen,” said Grace. “We play Wigan on Monday night, and we will see where we go from there.

“Anybody who wants to put their name forward, this is the time. It was always our intention to expand the board, as with four directors, we realised we needed help.

“Coach Ged Stokes and the players have immense respect for Barry, and he’s still there in the background.

“We all know what Barry means to the club, and you have to pay immense tribute to the guy.”

Grace revealed that Richardson’s credibility had been an important factor in the club recently securing a £75,000 loan from the West Cumbria Development Fund, which had been vital in shoring up the club’s immediate future.

“Given his work commitments, he’s made the right decision,” the chairman added. “When you wear the badge of a director, you have to be visible.”

Richardson has agreed to continue in a role as an advisor to the board.

Marketing director Mike Graham said: “A huge debt of gratitude is owed to Barry for all the hard work he has tirelessly carried out at the club.

“I am pleased that Barry will continue in an advisory capacity. Barry has become a personal friend, and I wish him and his family well for the future.”
